Does the Animal Medical & Surgical Center of Coshocton offer at-home euthanasia?

Yes. We provide in-home euthanasia for dogs and cats during business hours. At-home euthanasia allows your pet to pass in a familiar, comfortable environment—at home, surrounded by the people and spaces they know and love. We approach every at-home visit with the same compassion and professionalism we bring to all of our care, and we take the time to make sure both your animal and your family feel supported throughout the process.

What is the difference between at-home euthanasia and in-clinic euthanasia?

Both options involve the same gentle, peaceful process—the primary difference is location and the experience it creates for your family. At-home euthanasia takes place in your pet's familiar environment, which can reduce anxiety for both the animal and the family, and allows for a more private, personal goodbye. In-clinic euthanasia takes place at our Coshocton facility with our full team present, which some families find comforting.

There is no right or wrong choice—only what feels most appropriate for your pet and your family.

How do I know when it's time to consider euthanasia for my pet?

This is one of the most difficult questions a pet owner faces, and there is no single answer that applies to every animal or situation. In general, we evaluate quality of life by looking at your pet's ability to eat, drink, move comfortably, engage with their environment, and experience more good days than difficult ones. When pain, discomfort, or loss of function can no longer be managed in a way that preserves meaningful quality of life, euthanasia may be the most compassionate option available.

We encourage you to call our team to talk through your pet's specific situation—we're here to help you think through this decision with honesty and care, not to rush it.

Do you offer hospice or palliative care for pets?

Yes. For families who are not yet ready for euthanasia but whose pet is facing a terminal illness or declining quality of life, we offer hospice and palliative care support. This may include pain management, comfort care measures, and guidance on monitoring quality of life at home. Our goal in hospice care is to keep your pet as comfortable as possible for as long as their quality of life can be reasonably maintained, while supporting your family through a difficult and emotional time.

What happens after my pet passes? Do you offer cremation services?

Yes. We can assist with private or communal cremation arrangements following euthanasia. Private cremation returns your pet's ashes to you individually; communal cremation is a more affordable option in which multiple pets are cremated together, and ashes are not returned. We'll walk you through the available options so you can make the choice that feels right for your family and honors your pet appropriately.

Is at-home euthanasia available after hours or on weekends?

At-home euthanasia for small animals is currently available during business hours only. If you have an after-hours concern about your pet's comfort or condition, please call our main line at (740) 622-0013—calls transfer to our on-call veterinarian, who can help you assess the situation and determine the most appropriate next step for your animal's care.
